When I came back to Iligan in 1998 after spending 19 years in the U.S., I enrolled my daughter in La Salle and joined the Parent Association. In 2002, I was asked by Miss Mila Manatad, school principal, if I would be interested in joining a multi-sectoral group from LSA called regional reflection council that would study and discuss proposed issues and concerns from different schools in preparation for the 2003 Philippine Lasallian Family Convocation and I agreed. I attended the 2003 convocation at LSGH, was a member of the Mindanao reflection council for the 2008 PLFC and remained a part of the LSA reflection councils ever since.
One of the most enriching experiences for me as a Lasallian partner was being a part of the DLSP team that went up to Marawi multiple times to extend a hand to the victims of the siege. I am ashamed to admit that despite living in Iligan City which is only a few minutes away from Marawi , I had never gone up there. Fear, ignorance and prejudice kept me away. It was with a lot of trepidation that I decided to join Sir Gladstone to distribute school bags to different schools in Marawi. After the third trip with Ms. Grace Lazo, I was a changed woman. I was totally blown away by how beautiful this Islamic City by Lake Lanao was; how sad it was that it had to take a war and devastation to bring me there; how strong and courageous the Maranaws were; how intricate and gorgeous their handicrafts were; how rich their culture was; how delicious their food was and many more realizations. I hope DLSP will continue to reach out to the Maranaw community. We have much to learn from each other.
The challenge for the mission is to remain vigilant and mindful of the changes and innovations that are happening in our midst and abroad so we can respond and adjust quickly to better serve our community. It is my hope that La Salle will continue to lead in the initiatives for educational innovations, access to Lasallian education, poverty alleviation, environmental protection and preservation, justice and peace. I will do my best to add value to the Lasallian mission.
